Are cheap printer ink cartridges good value?

There is a big difference between cheap and value for money. Many people are blinkered when they make a purchase, they feel that the best is the cheapest and in many cases this is not the truth when life expectancy is taken into account. There is a great deal of truth to this, but not with cheap printer ink cartridges.

The most common printer is the inkjet design; many different manufacturers produce many different models which are designed for certain functions. Some inkjet printers are quite complex, bringing multifunction to the home or small office. These machines, as well as printing also scan documents, act as a fax and as a photocopier. They are ideal because they have a reasonably small footprint when compared to amount of space that would be required for four different machines.

The one common denominator about all inkjet machines is the fact that they require ink cartridges. These cartridges are available from a number of different sources, including the original retailer who sold the printer. The ink cartridges made by the printer manufacturer are terribly expensive, many people think that the printer manufacturer actually loses money on the sale of the printer and then makes the losses up through the sale of very expensive ink.

An industry has evolved to combat the high price of replacement OEM cartridges, there are now many unique retailers, both “brick and mortar” stores as well as online retailers that sell cheap printer ink cartridges. These cartridges are either generic aftermarket products, built to fit into the appropriate printer and provide excellent print results or they are the same cartridge that came with the printer but refilled with ink. Both of these approaches can save the owner of the device a great deal of money over time.

It is commonly thought that it is the print cartridge that makes the difference between acceptable results and poor quality results. There may be a little truth to this but the real reason is the resolution. The higher the print resolution the better the print results, it is resolution that dictates the DPI or dots per inch the printer uses to produce the image. No matter what print cartridge is used, low DPI printing will not be high quality.
